Keeping the game on at Worksop Town and Marine AFC
Holding two 3G pitches to the FIFA Quality Pro standard, season after season.
Worksop Town Football Club and Marine AFC sit at opposite sides of the country, but they have something important in common. Both compete in the Enterprise National League North, and at that level a club’s 3G pitch has to earn its place every single year. It is not enough for the surface to look and play well. It has to be independently tested and certified to FIFA Quality Pro, the highest performance standard there is for football turf. Fall short of it and the pitch cannot host football at this level.
That is a demanding bar, and it gets harder every season. A 3G surface has a working life of around ten years, and from the day it goes down it deteriorates with use, weather and time. Holding it at FIFA Quality Pro year after year takes more than day-to-day upkeep. It takes a plan, and it takes knowing when to act.
A partnership, not a call-out
We have worked with both clubs for a long time. Our regular, routine maintenance is designed to complement and enhance the good work the onsite grounds teams do day to day, not to replace it. They know their pitch better than anyone. Our job is to bring the specialist kit, the wider view of how these surfaces age, and the experience of what it takes to keep one certified, so that between us the pitch stays in the condition the league demands.
Why the standard gets harder to hold
A 3G carpet does not fail overnight. It slips quietly. The infill migrates away from the busiest zones and compacts down, the pile begins to lay flat, and dirt, leaf litter and general contamination work into the fibres, where over time they behave a little like cement setting in the base of the system. Left alone, the surface gets harder underfoot, less predictable for the ball and slower to drain. As the pitch ages, each of those pressures builds, and holding the FIFA Quality Pro line gets progressively more difficult. That is exactly when routine maintenance stops being a nicety and becomes the thing that keeps a club playing at the level it has worked to reach.
Worksop Town Football Club
At Worksop, the 3G surface is in near-constant use, so keeping it consistent through the heart of the season is the priority. In March, mid-season, our team spent a full day on the pitch carrying out a renovation. We decompacted and revived the pile, lifted and redistributed the infill, and topped it back up in the high-use areas where it had thinned.
Just as important as the machinery was the assessment that went with it. Every visit is logged against a thirteen-point condition check, from seams and inlaid lines to pile wear, infill levels and distribution, contamination, weed growth and the gateway areas. At Worksop the general condition was good, the infill levels were the main thing to bring back up, and the whole visit was recorded and signed off with the club before we left site. It is the kind of timely, restorative work that keeps the surface within the standard the league requires.
None of this happens in isolation. The day-to-day condition of the pitch is down to the club’s own grounds staff, who look after it week in and week out. Our visits are there to support and build on that work, bringing the specialist kit and the periodic, deeper maintenance the surface needs to hold its standard.
“At a club like ours, the pitch has to earn its certification year after year, and as it ages that gets harder, not easier. What I value about working with Replay is that they never let us get caught out. They complement the good work our own grounds staff do week to week, they understand exactly what the FIFA Quality Pro standard demands, and they guide us on when a renovation or an infill top up is needed to keep us compliant. It is a genuine partnership, and one we would recommend to any club in our position.”

Marine AFC
On Merseyside, Marine timed things differently, booking their renovation for the pre-season so the pitch would be at its best going into the new campaign. We were on site across two days in July.
The approach mirrored Worksop: decompaction, infill redistribution and top-up, contamination cleared from the carpet, and the same thirteen-point assessment to finish. A handful of items, the seams, some pile wear in the busiest zones, a little weed growth at the margins and the gateway areas, were noted to monitor. That is not a fault list. It is the plan for the next visit, written down. Before, during and after photographs from the work sit on the club’s Replay Portal, so there is always a clear record of the surface’s condition at every stage.
As at Worksop, the day-to-day credit belongs to the club’s own grounds, who keep the pitch in good order between our visits. Our part is the heavier, periodic work that complements what they do on the surface every week.
“Our 3G pitch is the heart of this football club and keeping it to the FIFA Quality Pro standard every season is not something you can leave to chance. Replay have been a trusted partner to us for many years. They work alongside our own grounds team, tell us straight when the surface needs attention, and make sure the work is done at the right time. It gives everyone at the club real peace of mind.”
Dave McMillan, Head of Media and Vice Chairman, Marine AFC
Guiding the clubs to stay compliant
What really sets the relationship apart is not any single visit. It is the guidance around it. Because we understand the FIFA Quality Pro standard and we know how a 3G surface ages, we can advise each club at the right moments, well before a problem shows up in a test. When the surface needs additional, restorative work to bring it back up, whether that is a full renovation or an infill top-up, we flag it, explain why, and time it so the pitch stays compliant rather than slipping below the line and scrambling to recover.
In practice, that means we hand-hold both clubs through the life of their pitch: assessing, advising, carrying out the work, recording it and signing it off, so that year on year the surface keeps meeting the standard the Enterprise National League North demands. As the pitch approaches the end of its natural life, that same honest guidance helps the club plan properly for what comes next.

Staying on the right side of the standard
Worksop and Marine are far from alone. Any club whose league asks its 3G pitch to be certified each year is up against the same clock, and in my experience the ones that stay on the right side of it are those that treat maintenance as part of the calendar rather than a reaction to a looming test.
For a club at this level, the pitch is one of the biggest assets it owns, and the standard it has to meet is not going away. The principle is the same wherever it applies. Look after the surface before it asks you to, and it quietly gets on with looking after the football.
